Under Other Skies
Baltimore Museum of Art, Baltimore, MD
February 26th - December 28th, 2025
In longing for place, a third space emerges, bridging fact and fantasy. For artist Abigail Lucien, this is the space where truth and myth hold equal weight, where recorded histories lap at the shores of speculative futures. Ten new sculptures make up the environment of the gallery and conjure the complexities of existing in a third space.
Under Other Skies recites lyrics from “Haïti,” performed on film in French by Josephine Baker (1906–1975) in 1934. Baker sings of a dreamlike longing to return to a place that feels like “paradise” or “home” but may not ever actually exist outside the mind. And yet, the desire to belong remains alive. To embrace dimensionality, to seek connection in ever-changing conditions, is to open spaces of possibility under any sky above.
